Alex Ettling, Bradley Shaw, Helen Bodycomb and Mike Mullins unpick what it takes to be one’s own publisher. They outline the pathways, from turning those boxes in the garage into a (sellable) archive, through publishing one’s own book, to building a boutique publishing house with Suzanne Donisthorpe making sense of it all.

Alex Ettling is a social historian based in Melbourne, Australia. His historical practise incorporates writing, graphics and audio, frequently working in collaboration. Alex has been conducting an oral history program since 2018, and is a co-editor of Knocking The Top Off: A People's History of Alcohol in Australia.

Bradley Shaw believes every writer should write first and not be overwhelmed by sales and marketing processes that are expensive and time wasting. He designed the agency using the hybrid model of authors contributing small amounts to a collective spread of marketing and promotion, allowing for higher brand development for all.

Helen Bodycomb is an artist from central Victoria. In mid-June 2023, Helen published Mosaicism -Thinking in Mosaic. It is a literary meditation on making and a philosophy book of particular interest to makers and lovers of the ancient art form of mosaic. Published as a dual English/Italian illustrated text.

Mike Mullins is the founding director of the Performance Space in Sydney. Between 1973 and 1986 he created a number of boundary-testing performances. He moved on to became an executive producer of cultural and corporate events. He is currently writing his memoir, Anxious: The Story of No-One.

Suzanne Donisthorpe worked at ABC RN for 23 years as a producer/reporter on every incarnation of the books and arts shows. Since 2016 she's been presenting shows on Castlemaine's MAINfm. She also works as an arts producer/curator and is the author of, Getting Up under her nom de plume, SD Thorpe.
