Sally Ford and the Idiomatics with Helen Garner, Jane Clifton and Wayne Macauley present Underscore, a genre-bending, genre-blending musical and literary salon. Underscore blurs the lines between music, storytelling, song and recitation, as the three acclaimed writers present excerpts of their work over a lush electro-acoustic soundscape combining synths, samples, keys, electronica, trombone, sax, flute, cello (from Alice Garner) and occasional whistling! A richly imagined musical and literary experience.
Followed by the return of the 2023 Festival favourites, the Footscray Gypsy Orchestra.
Sally Ford and the Idiomatics is an ensemble that fuses the musical provenance of its members - latin, electronica, ska, jazz, brass band, pop and funk - into a genre-defying synthesis sometimes described as melancholia electronica. The musicians bring to the Idiomatics their collective legacy of leading or performing with bands including the Melbourne Ska Orchestra, the Spaghetti Western Orchestra, Texicali Rose, Yothu Yindi, Sally Ford and the Pachuco Playboys, Joe Camilleri’s Black Sorrows, Ska Vendors, Skazz and Frank Yamma.
The multicultural music of the Footscray Gypsy Orchestra smashes all walls and borders and brings fresh excitement to Balkan, Klezmer and European styles in a dozen languages. They will stir your heart and move your feet with a diversity of familiar favourites and authentic village music.
